A day trip to Granite Island Recreation and Nature Park at Victor Harbour in South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula is a memorable and charming excursion, especially in the warmer months. Head over in time for a casual lunch over-looking the rocks and do some seal and penguin spotting before an easy drive back to Adelaide. As a family holiday destination, Granite Island with kids is an easy outdoor excursion – and the nostalgic and charming horse-drawn tram doesn't hurt either.

If you're heading to Adelaide with kids, Granite Island definitely warrants a day trip for the fresh air and beautiful coastal scenery.

Along the picturesque causeway at Victor Harbour is an old double decker horse-drawn Glenelg tram that makes its way across to Granite Island. The trip across is a lovely, quiet ramble with beautiful sea views which small children will love.

At Granite Island, pop into the Penguin Centre to learn about the little penguins. At dusk guided penguin tours are also on offer. There are rocks to climb for a view over the crashing waves and sometimes you can even spot fur seals. There is also a walk around the island for older kids (not stroller-friendly and difficult for toddlers) and a kiosk if you prefer to just sit with the little bubs and just take in a coffee and the views.

On the way back, if you prefer not to return via tram, it is a very easy and pleasant walk back over the causeway which is easily manageable with a stroller.

For a family excursion that will keep children occupied and offer parents an easy day trip, visiting Granite Island is worthwhile.
