Last year suitcases&strollers put out a call for help for the many families incarcerated on Christmas Island as asylum seekers by asking you to donate to not-for-profit organisation Books For New Arrivals. Your generous support was converted into quantities of English language books and dictionaries for the families – including women and children – detained on Christmas Island in Australia indefinitely waiting to be official approved (or not) as refugees. The books arrived…to overwhelming response.

Books For New Arrivals received 30 personal and handwritten letters of thanks from the many “boat people” on Christmas Island. The asylum seekers were so grateful for the little bit of humanity shown to them that they painstakingly drafted and redrafted their letters of thanks to get them absolutely right, no mean feat for people who cannot speak English.

A big thank you to the readers of suitcases&strollers who have shown an interest in helping other families for whom travel is not a luxury or family holiday but a hardship, necessity and a means to setting up a new life in a faraway land.
