Kids' family travel tips and why they love family vacations. 9-year-old Winnie Mastores has recently become a bit of an expert on Asia having just spent over 5 months traveling around the region with her mum Tahli and brothers Gus (6) and Myles (3). Winnie may not have been attending school while she was visiting Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar and Thailand, but along the way she and her brothers used currency conversion and kilometres covered to practice their maths and blogging to practice their literacy skills. And Winnie learnt one of the most important skills of all – how to use travel to push herself out of her comfort zone.
What are the three best things that make a great family holiday for kids?
Spending time with my family, seeing new places and things and adventure.
You get to decide what to do and where to go which you don’t do when you are at home because you have to go to school.
What do you think you get out of travelling that you don't get when you stay at home?
Adventure and confidence to ask people questions.
Where has been your favourite place to family holiday?
Malaysia. We went parasailing on the beach and George Town was my favourite to go bike riding and see all the street art.

Going parasailing was really good. I didn’t want to go but I saw Gus do it first and he had so much fun so I did it. We went parasailing in Batu Ferringhi [in Penang, Malaysia] just out front of Lone Pine Hotel. I went up so high and saw such an amazing view of the water and buildings.
Climbing up all the stairs of the pagoda in Bagan, Myanmar [was great] because I didn’t think I could do it and even though I was scared it was good to see all the other pagodas around from that high up.

Seeing the Taj Mahal [in India] was amazing. We have built a puzzle at home but it’s so much better in real life.
Is there somewhere you regularly go on family holidays?
Singapore because my cousins live there. I like swimming there, going to Gardens on the Bay, the Art Science Museum and I like it because it’s so clean and they don’t allow chewing gum.
Are there any family holidays that you've been on that you didn't like?
Cambodia when I was 3 because I got really sick. Getting sick means that everyone else can get sick and does not make the holiday good. Lucky I can’t really remember it.
Is there anything you don’t like about travelling in general?
You can’t drink the water is some countries because it can make you sick.
Plane rides are also not my favourite! I get a little bit scared and you have to wait around so much.
Fear of Flying In Kids
Where is the one place in the world you haven't been to that you would like to go?
Hawaii. I’ve secretly planned to go there with my cousin Sadie when she is 13 and I am 16. We want to go to the beaches.
The Big Island in Hawaii For Families
If you could plan the perfect family holiday for you, where would it be and what would you do?
Skiing in Japan because we have done lots of travel in summer and it would be good to go to the snow and I love Japanese food.
